Baiona

Baiona is a popular resort with an attractive harbour. It is to this harbour that one of Christopher Columbus' ships, the Pinta, arrived after discovering the New World.

To the north of the town there is the Monterreal promontory. Its medieval walls surround what was once a royal fortress but has now been converted into a lovely parador. If you can't afford to spend the night it is still worth paying the small fee to walk around the parapet and enjoy the fabulous views.  The cannons that used to defend the town from pirates can still be seen.

About 3km away on the coast south of Baiona there is a massive stone statue of the Virgin de la Roca.
