Hondarribia

Just a few kilometers from the French border Hondarribia is close to sea and mountains. The city is uninspiring but the old town high above and seperated by 15th Century walls is well worth the trip.

The huge church of Santa Maria de la Asuncion and the castle, the Palacio de Carlos Quinto, now a fabulous looking parador, dominate the top of the old town.  The town has narrow cobbled streets flanked by old houses with intricately carved wooden balconies. The old town itself is surrounded by a 15th century wall and is entered through the Puerta de Santa Maria.
