Spain is a beautiful country steeped in history. It has more UNESCO World Heritage sites than any other country in the World apart from Italy. Italy has 44 sites and Spain has 41. It was conquered by the Moors who have left Spain with a fine Moorish architectural legacy and after the Moors were defeated it went on to amass enormous wealth during its conquest of the New World and has spent a lot of money building beautiful Cathedrals and palaces. Inevitably there are many beautiful cities in Spain. I've put together a list of the top ten most beautiful cities of Spain (in alphabetical order).
Barcelona, Catalonia - particularly famous for its Modernist architecture, especially the buildings of Gaudi but Barcelona also has a fine medieval quarter.
Caceres, Extremadura - with Roman, Moorish and Conquistador architecture.
Cordoba, Andalucia - home to the Mezquita - a fabulous Mosque.
Cuenca - a beautiful fortified town which has been amazingly well preserved.
Grenada, Andalucia - with the legendary Alhambra Palace and Generalife.
Salamanca, Castile and Leon - a beautiful university town built of sandstone which gives the whole city a golden glow. Fabulous Rennaissance architecture abounds in the city.
Palma de Mallorca, Majorca - plenty of Moorish influence in the architecture and a huge Gothic cathedral.
Santiago de Compostella, Galicia - Santiago's main square, dominated by the Cathedral is one of the loveliest in Europe.
Seville, Andalucia - one of the most popular cities in Spain with a Gothic superb cathedral and tower, La Giralda, plus the Royal Palaces with their Mudejar architecture.
Spain also has a wonderful selection of "most beautiful villages".
