The Synagogue is located in the Jewish Quarter of Toledo between the El Greco museum and the Monastery of San Juan de los Reyes.

The Synagogue of Sant Maria la Blanca was once the main synagogue of Toledo. According to a date carved into one of the beams it was built in 1180 AD which would make it one of the oldest synagogues still standing in Europe.

It was rebuilt in the 13th century and converted into a Christian church in the early 15th century. Since then it has been a refuge for penitential women, a barracks and a warehouse but it was restored in 1856 and now it is open to the public to visit.

The synagogue is a beautiful Mudejar construction with five naves separated by horseshoe-shaped arches supported by octagonal pillars and with capitals carved with pinecones.

In the 16th century three apses were added at the rear of the building and these are in a Renaissance style.

The synagogue is a Mudejar building and is considered to be an excellent example of Almohad architecture. Noteworthy in this regard are the plain white walls and the brick pillars.

The synagogue is surrounded by a courtyard where people could gather before and after prayers.

The synagogue is open virtually everyday from 10.00 to 18.45. It is cheap to enter and audio guides are available in English and Spanish.
